Street Detectives (Topic launch date 24/2/20)
This way or that way? Where should we go? To Alexander park or down Ashton Road? We will learn about our local community, looking at houses and shops old and new and finding out how our streets have changed since our mums and dads were young. Creating maps and producing ideas to improve the streets in which we live.
During this topic, we will focus on the immediate area surrounding our school. Watch this space for some amazing work as we discover the history of our streets and the reasons they have changed. We will also be learning geographical skills such as map making and the study of human geography in our area. Who lives here now? Who used to love here? Why did it change so much?

Afternoon Tea.
To finish our topic about London, we took part in an Afternoon Tea. We had cucumber sadwiches, scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream and our own chocolate rice crispie cakes (which we made following our own instruction). We then had a tea dance to Vivaldis four seasons. What a wonderful end to our brilliant topic about The Great Fire of London.

Pattercake Pattercake Bakers Class!
During or Great Fire of London Topic, we recreated a bakery just like Thomas Farriner’s Bakery on Pudding Lane which started the fire back in 1666! In English, we were writing instructions. To help us understand what makes a good or bad instruction, we followed some to create our own biscuits. We were very relieved that we didn’t start THE GREAT FIRE OF OLDHAM!
First, we did a taste test on some biscuits which Mrs Despard bought from the shop to decide which flavours we wanted to bake. Then we made our own and Mrs Harrison kindly cooked them for us. They were delicious! We then evaluated our biscuits and decided if we would change anything if we baked them again!

Amazing Architects!
We studied the buildings, landmarks and transport of modern day London and made comparisons to how it was in the past. We also discussed how the Fire of London changed the materials used in buildings today. In D&T we used cardboard from our recycling to create landmarks, houses and transport from the present and past.

Time travellers
In History we travelled bak in time to 1666 and then created time lines to show the events of the Great Fire of London. We were amazed how quickly the fire spread and shocked to find out that 1/3 of London was destroyed! This was due to the buildings being made from Wood and built so closely together! Did you know that the King ordered some houses to be blown up using Gun Powder! We also discovered how basic the equipment was. They had no fire service in those days so no fire engines! They didn’t even have hoses so had to form human chains and use leather buckets. We had fun creating our own human chain to re-enact the scene. We discovered that it was due to the Great Fire of London that the fire service, which we know today, was founded.

Extra Extra read all about it!!! The Willow Gazette was created by researching facts from the Great Fire of London. We also used the knowledge we gained during the production of our timelines. We interviewed a witness and role played the job of a news reporter creating questions and answers in turns. We then wrote up our newspapers and used tea bags to make them look old. We are very proud of our writing!
